She encouraged me to tell the family. She was a devout Roman Catholic, and she grew up in Nebraska, where she spent her whole life. But she always remained open to the varieties of human experience. She taught me a lot, and I loved her more than I loved anyone else. She died of lymphoma in 1999. I sometimes still dream of her at night and wake up crying.
